History:
I found a 1970 Fiat 124 BC Coupe shell that
was rust free and had a rollcage fitted. It also came
with enough bits (or so I thought) to easily put it
back together.... how wrong was I! As with many racecars,
it is often quicker and easier to learn from the success
of others. In my case, I had to look no futher than
Mal Simmonds who had been campaigning NZ's fastest
124 for some time now.
Mal
knew that with my work commitments (and my total lack
of fabrication abililty!) so that unless he took over
the project, it would never be complete. That also
could mean that he would not have the opportunity
to race me head-for-head in like cars. So he agreed
to take the project and deliver me back the car with
the major work undertaken for me to complete the minor
assembly.
With
Mal's experience and knowledge, the car was modified
in the known 'weak' areas, mechanicals installed,
instruments and wiring done, etc. The first run of
the car was last weekend (08.08.04), and the car ran
strong. I am looking foward to the upcoming track
days, after I fit some new tyres!
I
can vouch for Mal's spooky ability to know what parts
from later model Fiats fit our older cars. This gives
not only simpler supply issues, but also usually stronger
and more reliable parts. If you own a classic Fiat/Lancia/Alfa
and are finding it hard to locate parts, contact Mal.
